Un-monumental,
2022

This ironic, playful work builds on my interest in monuments and the everyday. It was conceived just after I completed work on “Embrace Failure”. At the time, I was unwell, and bedridden for a few weeks. I spent most days in a sleepy haze, watching a flock of pigeons roost, then fly off, and return to roost on the roof of  my neighbor’s house. I was struck by how tenacious the birds were, despite inclement weather, lack of food and a comfortable resting place. I wanted to make an anti-monument to these heroic, resilient birds, and thought it fitting to repurpose pigeon trophies, used in bird shooting, to celebrate their triumph. The inverted old school-case is reminiscent of the urban structures that these birds navigate and now occupy. It also relates to the transitory, impermanent ‘Museum Under Erasure’, not the permanent, concrete monuments one customarily finds. The precariousness of this anti-monument seems poetic and fitting as tribute to the pigeons.  The work was exhibited on Romancing the Stone, at the  KZNSA, 2022.
