Following a Grail,
2002

In this body of work, produced in 2002, I explore issues of representation, and the veracity of the photographic image, through documenting a series of site specific sculptures in situ, and manipulating the documentations while printing them in a darkroom. I began by making a series of body casts, using transparent packaging tape, which I placed in public places in the city, and photographed, on site. Because of the nature of the tape from which the figures were constructed, there was a disjunction between the figures and their environments. Through manipulating the printing process when printing the photographs, I attempted to 'reconcile' the figures to their surroundings, by blurring the boundaries of the figure and background. The title refers to the absurdity of this process, as well as the constructed nature of the images. Within the title there is the warning that believing in images is like following a grail, because images are particular kinds of representations, as Magritte pointed out in his The Treason of Images (1929).
