Toxic Cumulation,
2022

This work was made in response to the theme “Cloud Matters”, an exhibition that formed part of a conference titled, hosted by North West University, that explored the effects of digital waste on climate change in Africa. Participating artists were asked to create a ‘message in a bottle’ for other delegates in response to the theme. To create the work, I used ten, small, square bottles, into which I placed a square of wax printed fabric from Ghana (a country that accepts digital waste from the West for a fee), and 20ml of polluted rainwater. These bottles were then placed in the sun, on the lawns at the conference venue, with the other ‘messages in bottles’. As the sun did its magic, evaporation, condensation, and then accumulation occurred on the sides of bottles, essentially creating toxic clouds. Over time the toxic water will start to degenerate the fabric in the bottles, making the works microcosms for what is taking place on a global scale with the environmental effects of digital waste in Africa.
